Duties

Your duties may include washing, ironing, light house-work (vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes), meal preparation, taking children to and from play-group/school, and otherwise helping with the children (feeding, bathing, creative activities, homework).

You will be working on average 25-30 hours per week, but much of this is quite informal. If you are from Eastern Europe or Switzerland, you are only permitted to work 25 hours so please talk to your host family to plan a time-table for your duties. You will have 2 days free per week, and be given the opportunity to attend the church of the family, or an alternative one.

Pocket Money
The pocket money you receive for your work will depend on the work you are asked to do. By law, the minimum is £60 per week (some families will pay more than this), for a 25 hour week, and most families will pay this. We do not expect au pairs to take sole charge of children under the age of 2 years. If a parent is at home full-time, the au pair may work with babies in a supportive role. If you choose to take sole charge of a pre-school child for more than 15 hours per week, you will receive £70.

Payment is subject to changes depending on legislation and government policies.

Opportunities
You will have a private room of your own and will receive full board and lodgings. Any extra 'personal' luxuries will need to be paid for personally. You will have the opportunity, if you wish, to study in an English Language school, or attend short language courses. You do not need to register until you arrive, and payment for the courses can be made from your earnings.

There is no legal entitlement to take a holiday whilst in England. However, a family will often allow this if staying for a year. Please realise, however, that any travelling abroad from England will require medical or travel insurance cover through a travel agency.

If you have an international driving licence, many families may allow you the use of a car.

If you have any worries or questions, when you are in Britain, our agency is hear to help you. Please contact us at any time. You may even wish to come and visit us. We offer courses once a year on which you are offered information on child development, culture, and changes in Britain. Should you require information about other au pairs in your local area, you can telephone the office for this.
